White egret flower
Common name: White egret flower, fringed orchid
Scientific name: Habenaria radiata
Distribution:
This species of orchids is endemic to China, Japan, Korea and Russia, where it makes its home on grassy wetlands and seepage slopes.
Description:
One of Japan’s most famous orchids, this terrestrial plant begins flowering late in summers. It is easily visible how this species got the name ‘egret flower’. This plant produces delicate white flowers filled with honey like substance. Indeed, the lateral lobes of the lips give the distinctive snowy egret shape with its feathers spread out. The petals are pure white and lightly toothed, resembling the bird’s wings. A large nectary (a glandlike organ, located outside or within a flower), green in colour, is also present just below the lip forming an arc.
Importance-
1.These flowers are highly valued for cut flower production.
2. They are also used as potted plants in gardens.
Seeing this flower for the first time, and one cant be left untouched by its angelic appearance. Truly, this is a regal flower.
