Scientific Name: Hydrocynus goliath

Distribution: Congo River and its tributaries, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Upembwa.

Description:
When you have the word “Goliath” in a name, it should be huge, gigantic and the goliath tigerfish stands up to the mark with its name. It is the largest of all tigerfishes and can grow up to a length of 5 feet and weigh up to 154 pounds. It has sharp dagger-like teeth that can tear anything within its reach.

Habit:
It rarely attacks humans and loves to live in those places where other fishes are much smaller which is taken as food. This fish is a fearsome predator and said to be the only fish that isn’t afraid of the crocodile. It even hunts smaller crocodiles.

Importance:
It plays an important role as a large predator of the riverine ecosystem.
