Resplendent Quetzal

The resplendent quetzal is a bird belonging to the trogon family. It is found from Southern Mexico to Western Panama. The bird is known for its beautiful plumage, specially the male. The male has iridescent green plumage with golden, blue and violet glow. The breast is deep crimson. The bird is about 30-40cm long with a 65cm tail covert that hides its main stalk. The primary wing coverts are also unusually long which gives it a fabulous appearance. It has a helmet-shaped head with flame like green crest. The bill is yellow and partly covered with the crest. The female lacks the long tail and has a black bill. Resplendent quetzal is a weak flier, also its skin is very thin and easily torn, so it has thick plumage to protect the skin. The bird feeds on fruits and small insects and reptiles.
