Location:
Madidi national park is a national park on the upper basin of Amazon river in Bolivia. It is located in the Northwest region of the Department of La Paz, in the provinces Franz Tamayo, Iturralde and Abel Bautista Saavedra.
Description:
It was established in the year 1995, with an area of 18,958 square kilometres. Madidi is being a part of one of the largest protected area in the world. The Madidi national park is being named one of the most impressive national parks in America. It is truly wilderness area & steep jungle terrain. The park is adorned by its very exceptionally biological diversity & variety ecosystem.
Climate:
The Madidi national park`s climate is greatly dependent upon its altitude. The climate is basically cold in the alpine region, but the northern lowland’s temperature is tropical. The winter (May to September) of this region is dry. Average annual temperature is ranging 26 °C. The average annual rainfall is 716 mm. The rain occurs from October to March.
Flora and fauna:
The park area containing 80% of full dense forest & highly diversity of plant. More than 5500 of plants are noted in this national park’s area. Some plants are like Weinmannia boliviensis, walnut, Miconia theaezans, pines, wild coconut, alder, pubescens, myrtle, Myrsine coriacea, elmlaurel trees, Byrsonima indorum, Tetragastris altissima, Anadenanthera colubrina, bibosi, Didymopanax morototoni and Miconia multiflora.
Some hard woods like mahogany, cedar, Santa Maria and the sand-box tree. Some palm trees can be found here such as Ceroxylon pityrophyllum, Geonoma megalospatha, G. lindeniana and G. deversa, Socratea exorrhiza, Iriartea deltoidea, Scheelea princes, Astrocaryum spp., Phytelephas macrocarpa, Dictyocaryum lamarckianum, Euterpe precatoria and the royal palm Mauritia flexuosa. Quenua and huaycha is a plant which is newly found in this park region.
733 species of fauna have been listed as living things in this national park. The described animals here include around 156 species of mammals, 109 different reptiles and 88 different amphibian species, of which over 30 are found nowhere else on earth. Mammals are found here such as spectacled-bear, the Andean cat, the Andean deer, the white-tailed deer, the puma, the ocelot, the marsh deer, the jaguar, white-lipped peccary, the giant otter, the Titi monkeys, the spider monkey, the red howler monkey. Among them Titi monkey can be found in Madidi only. In this park area, more than 1000 species of birds are noted, representing 11% of total world bird species. The park is the home for birds like the ash-breasted tit, the tyrant flycatchers, the crested eagle, cock of the rock, humming birds, the harpy eagle. The rufous-faced antpitta is endangered bird species which is endemic to this region.
Threats:
The main threats of this park are road construction & the proposed Bala dam project. These are blocking the animal’s grazing area, path & breeding area. But like other parks, illegal hunting, poaching & logging are considerable threats.
Importance:
The Madidi national park has been a tourist attraction since 1970 because of its natural diversity & beauty. But because of poor management & inadequate facilities, the park could not be able to achieve the high amount of visitors. However the park authority has been taking some initiatives in order to develop the park with a hope to giving the park a better future.
