Bushman’s Pipe

Bushman’s Pipe (Ceropegia ampliata) is probably one of the most interesting flowers you’ll come across. A tropical plant found in South Africa. It is also called lantern flower, parachute flower, snake creeper, but the name which appeals the most is ‘string of hearts’. The peculiar fact about this plant is that d flower-tubes have several small hairs on its inner side which is directed downwards to form a temporary trap for small flies. In the flower, pollen sacks get attached to the bodies of the flies. When the flowers start to wilt, the hairs become lax and the trapped insect can leave its cage. Pollination takes place when it enters another flower. Bushman’s Pipe is commercially used as an ornamental house plant.
