Snakeskin Liverwort

Snakeskin Liverwort

The largest genera of the thalloid liverwarts. Aptly known as the snakeskin liverwort as the thallus is covered with several tiny hexagonal cells which makes the entire thallus seem snake like.
Another name for this genera is the scented liverwort. Sorry, no rewards for guessing why it is called so. You got it right. It gives a distinct smell when crushed.

Worldwide in distribution. Found across Europe and Canada. Grows on damp forest floors and moist rocks.

Provides food for larvae of the moth.
