April 7: World Health Day
The World Health Organisation (WHO) was constituted on this day in 1948. In the changing environment around us, health is becoming an important issue. This day is celebrated to highlight a priority area of public health concern in the world. Every year WHO select a theme on this day to spread awareness about a particular disease and suggests how to stay away from that. The theme for 2013 is “High Blood Pressure” or Hypertension, which is developing a worldwide risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. One in three adults worldwide has high blood pressure. But it can be controlled by reducing salt intake, eating a balanced diet, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, taking regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, avoiding tobacco use and living a stress free life.
2013: Healthy heart beat, Healthy blood pressure. The ultimate goal of World Health Day 2013 is to reduce heart attacks and strokes.
2014: The topic for 2014 is vector-borne diseases – such as mosquitoes, sandflies, bugs, ticks and snails which are responsible for transmitting a wide range of parasites and pathogens that can cause many different illnesses.
