Red Hibiscus
Common Name: Red Hibiscus, ‘Rokto-Joba’ (Bengali), hibiscus, China rose, sorrel, and ‘flor de Jamaica’, or less widely known as ‘rose mallow’.
Scientific Name: Hibiscus rosasinensis
Distribution: It is native to warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world.
Description: It is quite large and beautiful, containing several hundred species that are often noted for their showy flowers and are commonly known as The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees, more than 200 species.
Importance of Red Hibiscus:
In Malaysia, it is called “Bunga Raya” and is the national flower of the country. In Indonesia, it is known as ‘shoes flower’.
- In Haiti, on the opposite side of the world, it is known as ‘choublak’, creole deformation of English ‘shoe black’ – because the crushed flowers, especially the inside part, can be used to make a dark liquid or paste, used to clean shoes.
