Love-in-a-mist
Common name: Love-in-a-mist, ragged lady
Scientific name: Nigella damscena
Distribution:
Love-in-a-mist is native to Southern Europe, North Africa and South-west Asia found on damp patches of land.
Description:
These charming annual plants earn their common name from its flower. They show early summer blooming with vivid blue blossoms, but can be pink, white or purple in color too. A tangle of green, lacy finely divided leaf like bracts forms a mist around the flowers, hence the name. Another interesting characteristic of this plant is that, after flowering, each blossom becomes balloon-like and turns into the green seed-pod striped purple and bronze.
Importance:
1. The leaves and seeds are aromatic and are used by cooks and physicians.
2. The dried seed pods are used for flower arrangements.
3. They are also used to prevent moth damage to clothing.
