Is it true that Ants never sleep?
Ants never sleep?
It hasn’t been studied much, but some scientists say that yes, ants do sleep. It’s not exactly like human sleep, but workers had an average of 253 ‘sleep episodes’ a day, that lasted an average of 1.1 minutes, for a total of approximately 4.8 hours of sleep overall. Whereas fire ant queens only experienced 92 sleep episodes, but each lasted an average of 6 minutes, for a total of 9.4 hours of sleep overall.(Source: BBC)
The queens fell asleep at far more regular intervals than their subjects. In fact, the queens even synchronised their naps, with all three queens dozing together. Although the function of sleep is still unknown!
